Hello Omni Talk Fans! This week’s Fast Five might be the most AI-soaked episode we’ve ever recorded. AI showed up in the shopping cart, in the hiring process, and even walking down the aisle.
Riding shotgun with me this week was guest host Martin Bailie, who has run stores at Tesco, Lidl, and Primark, led Tesco’s joint venture with Tata in India through all three COVID waves, and has one hell of an Irish accent. And this week, all five headlines were absolute bangers (with a little mash thrown in too).
Martin and I had a blast discussing:
- Walmart’s new Agent Gateway: Amazon is building a wall against AI shopping agents and Walmart is building a gate. Martin and I both like Walmart’s approach better, but he raised what could be a real risk: does Walmart end up as “the warehouse behind somebody else’s front door?”
- Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus for $120: I’ve been asking for this for SIX years, and I’m keeping score at home. Martin’s no-fluff take is that Walmart isn’t selling a membership, it’s buying the household.
- Albertsons for U+ at $39: This was our closest thing to a fight. I called it desperate, and Martin swapped my word for “realistic.” Listen and decide who’s right.
- Gap’s AI recruiter, Bridgette: Martin is fully behind anything that gives store managers time back, as long as the data security is airtight. He brought receipts on that too.
- David’s Bridal spinning off Pearl: Martin says it’s “a brand spin-off with an AI label on it.” I, however, am buying it, which might be the first time in the history of this show I’ve supported a SPAC.
There’s all that, plus FMI’s Jennifer Shawgo joined us for 5 Insightful Minutes on FMI’s State of Technology 2026 report, and you’ll hear how I nearly lost control of a Black Friday crowd in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Martin’s tale of a Lidl “late check” prank that ended with three employees bolting across a dark parking lot, and why my dressing up as a Target executive would be the scariest costume in my neighborhood.
