Hello OmniTalk Fans!
When you’ve interviewed someone across five different cities, you stop calling it a coincidence and start calling it a tradition.
I sat down with Scott Price, Group CEO of DFI Retail Group, live from the CGF Leadership Studio at the Consumer Goods Forum Global Summit 2026 in Vienna, Austria. Scott sits on the CGF board, co-sponsors the Climate Transition Coalition, and runs one of the most geographically diverse retail organizations in the world. The conversation covered a lot of ground fast.
Here are my biggest takeaways:
AI Is Changing Everything Everywhere, All at Once
Scott’s framing from the jump was straightforward: the data cleanup process across the industry is accelerating, and with it comes the ability to solve problems that haven’t yet been fully adapted to the AI world. What’s less discussed is the carbon cost of that acceleration. A BCG study Scott referenced projects that scope 1 and 2 emissions could rise by as much as 7% as a result of AI infrastructure and data center growth. The open question is whether AI can also be the tool that more than offsets that increase.
Decentralized Organizations Are Winning
Scott shared data reviewed at the CGF board level showing that global brands have lost market share over the last five years across categories like soft drinks, snacks, and crackers. That share is being picked up by retailer own brands, startups, and local companies. His conclusion at DFI was to move away from centralization, which he described as scaling what are increasingly becoming commodities, toward a decentralized model built for local agility. AI, in his view, will accelerate this dynamic further by lowering the barriers for small businesses to innovate and get to market.
Scope 3 Is Where the Hard Work Starts
Most retailers have made meaningful progress on scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 3, which covers what you actually sell and take to market, is a different challenge entirely. For DFI, the biggest scope 3 challenges are commodities like rice, meat, and dairy. Scott pointed to a concrete example in Thailand where DFI has worked to produce significantly lower carbon rice, in part by addressing water usage in rice farming, which carries a much larger carbon footprint than most people realize. But with tens of thousands of small farmers involved, no single retailer can move the needle alone. Collaboration with other retailers and governments isn’t optional. It’s the only path forward.
The Industry Needs a Common Sustainability Reporting Standard
One of the most practical asks Scott put on the table was for standardized carbon data classification across the industry. Right now companies are navigating five to eight different carbon calculator frameworks, each slightly different, each hardwired into different tech systems. For manufacturers reporting to multiple retailers, that creates real cost and inefficiency that ultimately passes through to consumers. Scott compared solving it to agreeing on a QR code standard: not competitive, just sensible.
Three Questions Every Leader Should Ask When Entering a New Culture
Scott’s closing framework on navigating new cultures, whether national or organizational, was built from hard experience across a long career. First, understand how conflict gets resolved in the organization. Second, understand how influence actually works, because hierarchy and consultation vary enormously across geographies and companies. Third, figure out who is succeeding and why. Get those three answers within the first couple of months and the odds of a successful transition go up considerably.
The Bottom Line
Scott’s thread across the whole conversation is that the biggest challenges in consumer goods, AI adoption, sustainability, supply chain resilience, and market share defense, all require a clear-eyed view of what you can solve alone and what you can only solve together. The CGF exists precisely for that second category, and Scott’s presence at the board level signals that DFI is betting heavily on collaboration as a competitive capability, not just a good look.
