Hello GrocerTalk listeners,
Chris Walton is back for another week of GrocerTalk, and this time, we’re trying something a little different! We’re experimenting with the show’s format, and we need your feedback. What did you like? What didn’t work? What could be better? And what would you like to hear more about? We’re all ears.
And we’ve got plenty to get into this week. Boots has new owners, Sephora is making moves in the UK, grocery retailers are navigating changing SNAP restrictions, and delivery robots are taking to the pavements. Plus, Kevin Billings from Sifter Solutions joins us for Five Insightful Minutes.
Here’s what caught my attention this week.
Boots Has New Owners. Now Comes the Hard Part.
We kicked things off with the Weston family’s $8.9 billion acquisition of Boots, one of Britain’s biggest and best-known health and beauty retailers. (Source) Chris sees a potentially distressed asset, but I pushed back a little. Boots is still a market leader, and that position is worth an awful lot, even if the stores haven’t received the investment they’ve needed.
I told Chris about my local Boots, where you can find three generations of flooring and some rather questionable product adjacencies. It’s not exactly inspiring retail. But with new ownership and incoming CEO Alex Baldock, there’s a real opportunity to turn things around. The question is whether the Westons are prepared to invest what it takes.
Sephora and M&S? I’m All In.
Next up, Sephora is partnering with Marks & Spencer to open beauty destinations in 100 UK stores. (Source) I love this one. M&S has undergone an impressive turnaround, its locations are fantastic, and Sephora brings a whole new reason for younger shoppers to visit. That’s a pretty compelling combination.
I did raise the comparison with Sephora at Kohl’s, but Chris wasn’t having it. His argument was that Sephora has effectively been propping up Kohl’s, whereas M&S is already a strong retailer in its own right. Fair point. We agreed that execution will be everything, but I think this partnership could be a real winner.
Is Everyone Trying to Buy Everyone Else?
We couldn’t leave UK retail without a quick M&A roundup. Sainsbury’s has reportedly walked away from merger talks with Morrisons, which Chris somehow managed to turn into a dating analogy. (Source) Given Morrisons’ private equity ownership, though, the question of who might eventually buy the business isn’t going away.
We also touched on the rumors of Starbucks acquiring Chipotle, which Chris was considerably less enthusiastic about, and Tesco’s reported interest in Majestic Wine. (Source) (Source) That last one particularly interests me given the potential connections between Majestic’s wholesale operation and Tesco’s Booker business.
SNAP Waivers Are Becoming a Big Grocery Challenge
Kevin Billings from Sifter Solutions joined me for Five Insightful Minutes to discuss the changing SNAP landscape and the challenges retailers face as individual states introduce different restrictions. Kevin highlighted Sifter’s work in Arkansas, helping retailers identify eligible products and making it easier for shoppers to understand what they can purchase.
Chris raised an important point about the growing need for accurate product-level data. Between SNAP restrictions, GLP-1s, and changing nutritional preferences, grocers and CPG brands need to understand exactly what’s in the products they’re selling. And when SNAP represents a significant share of sales for some retailers, getting compliance right isn’t optional.
Can Grocery Tours Really Help Shoppers Eat Healthier?
The Giant Company is introducing guided grocery tours for shoppers using GLP-1 medications, helping them identify foods that meet their changing nutritional needs. (Source) I like the idea, but I asked Chris the obvious question: how do you scale it? Helping a handful of shoppers in person is one thing. Delivering that kind of support across hundreds of stores is quite another.
That led us back to electronic shelf labels and the ongoing debate over personalized pricing. (Source) I’ve always thought there’s a much more interesting opportunity to use ESLs to help shoppers find products that meet their dietary needs or SNAP eligibility. Why focus entirely on the potential for changing prices when the technology could make shopping genuinely easier?
Sidewalk Robots, Drones, or Neither?
Finally, autonomous delivery. Deliveroo is introducing Coco delivery robots in five UK cities, while Just Eat and Morrisons are expanding their partnership with Starship Technologies. (Source) (Source) We’ve talked plenty about drones, so I wanted to know whether Chris thought robots might be the better bet. His answer? He’s not entirely convinced by either.
And I can see why. The economics depend on density, distance, infrastructure, and whether these services can actually operate profitably. I pointed to Starship’s experience in Finland as an interesting example of what might work at scale, which naturally led to Chris suggesting a GrocerTalk field trip. Starship, if you’re listening, we’d be very happy to come and investigate!
One More Marketplace Worth Watching
Chris wrapped things up with Kaufland, the Schwarz Group retailer expanding its marketplace operations across Europe, including Spain. It’s one he’s keeping an eye on as the European marketplace landscape becomes increasingly competitive. We spend plenty of time talking about Amazon, but there are some fascinating developments happening elsewhere.
And that’s Episode 9! A new format, plenty of opinions, a few disagreements, and lots for us to think about. Now we really do need to hear from you. Did you like the way we covered the stories? Was there anything you’d change? What topics, retailers, or challenges should we spend more time on? Tell us what you liked, what you didn’t, and what would make GrocerTalk better. We want to build a show you genuinely look forward to every week.
