Hello OmniTalk Fans!
China’s dairy industry went from essentially zero to one of the largest in the world in about 40 years. The company at the center of that story is worth understanding.
I sat down with Chen Yiyi, Vice President of Mengniu Group, live from the CGF Leadership Studio at the Consumer Goods Forum Global Summit 2026 in Vienna, Austria. Mengniu started in 1999 and has grown into a roughly 10 billion euro business spanning chilled milk, ice cream, infant formula, and beyond, with operations across China, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. The conversation covered where the Chinese dairy consumer is heading and what Mengniu is doing to get there first.
Here are my biggest takeaways:
China’s Dairy Market Is Still in Its Early Chapters
Chen framed the Chinese consumer’s relationship with dairy as a relatively recent development, tracing back only about 40 years. Today milk shows up in coffee, tea, bubble tea, and across the daily routines of younger consumers who have fully embraced dairy as a high-nutrition, natural food choice. Around 80 to 90 percent of Chinese consumers now perceive dairy that way. The penetration opportunity is still significant, particularly given that roughly half of local consumers still deal with lactose intolerance, making product innovation around formulation a core part of the business.
Drink More, Drink Good, Drink Right
Mengniu’s three-pillar strategy maps directly to where the market is and where it is going. Drink more addresses expanding dairy penetration through better formulas and technology. Drink good is about quality across the entire value chain, from animal welfare and feeding through processing, shelf life, and traceability. Drink right is the newest challenge, responding to what Chen described as China’s Silver Hurricane, a rapidly aging population creating growing demand for adult nutrition formulas that didn’t exist as a category until recently.
The Food Company Is Becoming a Health Solution Provider
Chen was direct about how Mengniu is repositioning itself. The older model was built around energy, calories, and enjoyment. The new model is built around health management. GLP-1 trends, functional nutrition, and pharmaceutical-adjacent dairy products are not fringe bets for Mengniu. They represent where capex and strategy have been pointing for the last three to five years, with the expectation that what is a segment today becomes the mainstream tomorrow.
One Product, One QR Code Is Already in Practice
Mengniu’s traceability initiative gives every product a QR code that connects consumers to the full story of that product, from grass planting and farming through processing and distribution. The infrastructure behind it includes smart manufacturing plants and smart warehouses built specifically to make that traceability meaningful rather than cosmetic. Beyond consumer transparency, the system gives Mengniu a real-time monitor across every step of the operation, helping the organization move faster and run leaner.
AI and Sustainability Are the Two Things Chen Wants the Industry to Commit to Together
When asked what he would like to see the 400-plus companies at CGF commit to collectively, Chen named AI and sustainability without hesitation. On sustainability, Mengniu has planted 100 million trees in desert areas as part of its green farming practices, a signal that sustainability investment in China is being driven not just by regulation but by consumer and societal expectation. On AI, his ask was equally about responsibility as opportunity, specifically around ethics and compliance in a post-AI world.
The Bottom Line
Mengniu’s story is a useful lens on how fast a consumer goods market can mature and how quickly the companies within it have to evolve to keep pace. From building basic dairy penetration to repositioning as a health solution provider in under three decades, the pace of change in China’s consumer goods industry is a signal worth paying attention to for anyone thinking about where global consumer behavior is heading next.
