Hello Omni Talk Fans! Walmart just made the biggest DSL bet in retail history, Kroger is rethinking AI leadership from the inside out, and somehow Dick’s Sporting Goods ended up sandwiched between Claude and Gemini on the App Store. It’s a packed week on the Fast Five, to say the least.
Our resident talent expert, aka our “RTE,” Jenn Hahn also joined me this week. Jenn, as she always does, brought sharp takes, real-world operator perspective, and the kind of insight you only get from someone who spends her days in the trenches with the best of the best retail talent.
Here a taste of what Jenn and I got into together this week:
- Walmart’s massive digital shelf label rollout: 4,600 stores, all powered by Vusion’s DSL technology, in what is likely the single largest rollout of its kind in retail history. Jenn and I both agree this is long overdue. We also agree on what Walmart should NOT do with the labor savings it unlocks.
- Costco’s tariff refund pledge: CEO Ron Vachris went on the record saying any tariff refunds will go straight back to members through lower prices. I think it is a really savvy PR move, while Jenn brings a fascinating talent angle that I never would have considered.
- Kroger’s brand-new Chief Data and AI Officer: they tapped Milen Mahadevan from 84.51 to run the whole AI agenda. But is creating a Chief AI Officer actually the right move? Or is it just a boardroom answer to the wrong question? This one turned into a genuine debate, and one that likely mirrors the conversations happening in quite a few boardrooms right now.
- Kroger freezer drone deployment: Corvus Robotics is sending autonomous drones into sub-zero cold chain facilities so humans don’t have to. Having both spent too much time in freezers back in our days, Jenn and I both had a lot of guttural feelings about this one.
- Dick’s Sporting Goods crashes the App Store: their Move fitness app somehow landed at #3 right between Claude and Gemini, fueled entirely by a viral screenshot and the promise of roughly 10 cents a day. I’m downloading it. Jenn’s downloading it. Producer Ella’s downloading it. You?
There’s all that, plus nihilist penguins, this month’s OmniStar Award (congrats Mark Chenier, SVP GMM of Footwear at Academy Sports and Outdoors), and the absolutely ridiculously high chances Jenn gives her Michigan State Spartans of reaching the Final Four.
