Sometime in the late 1980s, Steve Martin did a wonderful end of the year sketch on Saturday Night Live called, “A Holiday Wish“ .
Every year thereafter, SNL would replay the sketch, where Martin would sit on his Masterpiece Theater-like armchair and share his wishes for the upcoming year, wishes that included everything from revenge against his enemies to having all encompassing power over every human being.
Oh, and of course, in a way that only Martin could, he would also throw in for good measure a final wish for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in a spirit of harmony and peace.
You know, just that.
And, in a year that has been unlike any other, now is the exact right time to pay homage to the great comedy legend. This year, more than any, needs to close with some humor and fun.
Retailers and their store associates have been working their tails off, consumers have at times been scared out of their minds to shop in stores, and industry pundits have at this point droned on so monotonously about things like buy online, pickup in store, that even Masterpiece Theater itself sounds almost as interesting as chess.
So, yes, it is time to kick the feet up, to take a load off, and to share something that should make readers smile, lift their spirits, and also point them in new directions and give them insights into ideas that could take root very soon.
That something is, of course, this year’s Holiday Wishes for Retail in 2021.
Enjoy!
