On the one hand, Amazon is a giant e-commerce website that sells everything from Band-Aids to OLED televisions. It’s where millions of Americans buy books, and clothes, and rugs for their living room.
On the other hand, it’s basically the world’s most successful membership program. Amazon Prime, with more than 150 million members. For $140 a year, you get a range of benefits, the most important of which is free shipping on all that stuff you buy on Amazon.
You also get Prime Video, and Prime Music, and some other stuff, but the shipping is the big deal. Amazon has single-handedly changed the expectation when it comes to having things shipped to our homes from something that might take a few days or a week, and cost us extra, to things that show up the next day for free.
