Omni Talk covers Eagle Eye’s Cherry’s Save Tonight with a new retail vibe. And, retailers are going nuts!
Today’s post is inspired by my good friend from college, Avin Bansal, or as I like to call him, the Sanjay Gupta of Strategic Operational Finance. Check out his LinkedIn profile and decide for yourself.
Every year Avin and I get together and usually somehow find ourselves at a late night Vegas diner, reminiscing over a shared plate of corned beef hash, about college and my incredible fondness at the time for the one and only, Eagle Eye Cherry. It is annual event he and I await with eager anticipation, and one also in which our loving wives, smartly, want no part.
Back in the glory days of 1998, every morning, while getting ready for class, I would play Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry on repeat for about 30 minutes at a time (yes, I was and still am a dork). As Avin always reminds me with great fondness, this habit got really annoying for my fellow residents, but I was also the RA (Resident Assistant) of the all-freshman dormitory in which we lived, and so there was pretty much no stopping the playing of the beloved, Swedish E.E.C. Plus a girl down the hall was even worse than me playing No Scrubs by TLC ALL DAY!
Then this morning, while discussing much more important adult topics with my wife, while we were riding in our VW Golf Alltrack (the poor man’s yuppie Subaru), what do you know should happen? Eagle Eye Cherry and Save Tonight came on the radio — the acoustic version too!
It was a sign! I was inspired! And, since I have subjected you, loyal reader, to so many long-form posts over the past few weeks, I figured today let’s have a little fun.
Here is a sampling of the actual song to jog your late 1990s memory:
Rest assured, I was not given the gift of song, so there will be no singing from me. My brother and sister got that talent, while I got early 40s balding. You will have to imagine the words in song as you read them.
Of course, however, if some avid reader out there feels like grabbing his or her acoustic guitar, and putting the below to music, I WILL POST IT IMMEDIATELY!!!!
So now, without further ado, I give you . . .
A Retail Cover of Save Tonight
Go on and close the cash wraps
‘Cause all we need is scan-and-go
You and me, and a cellular phone
To sh-op tonight (oh)
Well, we know retailers are going away
And, how I wish, I wish it weren’t so
So take this phone and scan with me
And, let’s order everything delivery
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
There’s a platform on fire
And it burns like Blockbuster too
Tomorrow comes with one desire
To save me with R&D (oh it’s true)
It ain’t easy to watch it die
Wall Street please, don’t short your buys
‘Cause girl you know retail’s got to go (oh)
Even if Terry J. doesn’t think it so
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
An apocalypse comes to change our ways
Soon, so soon, we’ll all just use ApplePay
But girl you know it’s about scan-and-go (oh)
Even if my mom wishes it wasn’t so
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
Save tonight and fight the Amazon
Come tomorrow, so many of us will be gone
So many of us will be gone
So many of us will be gone
So many of us will be gone
So many of us will be gone
Save Tonight
Save Tonight
Save Tonight
Save Tonight
Oh, that’s right
Save tonight
Save tonight
Be careful out there,
Chris
